LipopolysaccharidebindingproteinisaproteinthatinhumansisencodedbytheLBPgene.Thisgeneismappedto20q11.23.LBPisasolubleacute-phaseproteinthatbindstobacteriallipopolysaccharide(orLPS)toelicitimmuneresponsesbypresentingtheLPStoimportantcellsurfacepatternrecognitionreceptorscalledCD14andTLR4.Itispresentinthecerebrospinalfluidofpatientswithpneumococcalmeningitis.Theproteinencodedbythisgeneisinvolvedintheacute-phaseimmunologicresponsetogram-negativebacterialinfections.LBPismadeintheliverduringtheacutephaseofinfectionsandisthoughttofunctionasacarrierforLPSandtohelpcontrolLPS-dependentmonocyteresponses.
