Foot-and-mouthdiseasevirusisanonenvelopedicosahedralAphthovirusthatcontainssingle-strandedRNA.Foot-and-mouthdiseaseisahighlycontagiousandsometimesfataldiseaseofcattle,pigsandothercloven-hoofedanimals.Thediseaseischaracterisedbyhighfeverandblistersinsidethemouthandonthefeet.Althoughitdoesn’thaveahighmortalityrate,thediseasehasdebilitatingeffects,includingweightlossanddecreaseinmilkproduction,resultingindetrimentaleconomicramifications.Thevirusisspreadthroughdirectcontact.Thenon-structuralproteinsarenecessaryforviralreplicationandassuchmutationsinthisareaareprobablylesswelltoleratedthanintherestofthegenome.Non-structuralproteinshavebeentargetedaspossIBLediagnostictargetstodistinguishbetweeninfectedandvaccinatedanimals.
